World's highest penstock lines
A new hydroelectric power generating plant is currently taking shape in the eastern region of Iceland, and will supply energy to a new aluminium smelter from 2008 onward. The central element of the installation is made up of two vertical penstock-lines, the highest in the world, at 420 meters. No less impressive is the internal diameter of these pipes, at 3.4 meters.
The project engineers selected DI-MC thermomechanically rolled fine-grained steel from Dillinger Hütte GTS for fabrication of the penstock lines and the appurtenant bifurcations, the definitive criterion being this steel's excellent weldability. The heavy plate was supplied in thicknesses of up to 102 millimeters. Water-quenched and tempered DILLIMAX steel from Dillinger Hütte GTS, in thicknesses ranging up to 150 millimeters, was also used on this project, for heavily load-exposed components.
